Claudia Brownlie Interview

I had the pleasure today of interviewing Claudia Brownlie. Claudia is considered by some to be the online “Queen of Hypertufa,” she told me with a chuckle; but perhaps you don’t know what hypertufa is.

I have to admit that until recently I’d never heard of it either. My sister is the person who introduced me to it.

Hypertufa is a concoction made of Portland cement, peat moss, and perlite and water that hardens into a concrete-like substance and can be used to make all kinds of garden containers.

Hypertufa is made of easy to obtain ingredients. It is perfect for DIYers, and projects for garden clubs, scout troops and even children. With it, you can create your own affordable and unique garden art.

My sister made two containers out of hypertufa as a garden club project. They’re cool and if you are a DIY type of person or you’re looking for a cool craft project , I encourage you to find out more about hypertufa.

Claudia, like myself is a self taught gardener. She has also, completed Master Gardener training, although she is not currently active as a volunteer due to other personal responsibilities.

Years ago, Claudia discovered hypertufa. She says she isn’t an artist but grew up in a very rich, artistic environment. Her projects with hypertufa were successful and her friends liked them. She admits that she loves doing it. “It’s like making fancy mud pies.” It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

I found Claudia to be delightful and charming. She has taught many of her friends to make their own hypertufa projects. Through experimentation and personal experience Claudia has developed several recipes and methods for successful hypertufa projects and has now written a book full of tips to help you create successful projects of your own.

Claudia is a gardener after my own heart. She believes a garden should reflect the individuality of the gardener and she wants to encourage and inspire others to create their own special gardens.

She is the author of two books: The Hypertufa How-To Manual written about four years ago and a new book called The Shoestring Gardener.

I very much enjoyed talking to Claudia Brownlie and am delighted that now you’ve met her, too. Now that you know what hypertufa is are you inspired to make your own projects? I am!

But I need to know more to make sure my projects are successful ones and I’ll bet you do too. Please take a look at the information page that tells you everything you will learn from Claudia’s thorough and easy-to-learn-from book:

As always happy gardening and thanks for gardening with Julie.
